How Upwork fees work in 2026
Since May 2025, Upwork no longer charges every freelancer the same flat percentage. Instead, it uses a variable freelancer service fee between 0% and 15%. The exact fee for a job is calculated when you submit your proposal and stays fixed for that contract, so you always know it before you start work.
The fee is taken from every payment you receive: hourly invoices, fixed-price milestones, bonuses and tips. For most new client relationships the fee sits near the top of the range, so 10% to 15% is a sensible planning figure until you see the number for a specific job.
How to use this calculator
- Choose what you want to know. "What I'll receive" shows your take-home from a contract. "What I should charge" works backwards from the amount you want in your pocket.
- Set the service fee shown on the job. If you don't know it yet, try 10% and 15% to see the range.
- Add your withdrawal fee if you know it. It depends on your payout method and country.
The formula
Take-home = Contract amount × (1 − service fee) − withdrawal fee
Rate to charge = (Target take-home + withdrawal fee) ÷ (1 − service fee)
Fees that are not taken from you
Clients pay their own costs on top of your rate, such as a marketplace fee and a one-time contract initiation fee. These don't reduce your earnings, but they do make you slightly more expensive for the client, which is worth remembering when you set your price.
How to keep more of what you earn
- Build long-term clients. Repeat work with the same client is where fees tend to be lowest.
- Withdraw in larger batches. A flat fee per withdrawal hurts less when you move more money at once.
- Price the fee in. Use the "What I should charge" mode so the fee comes out of the client's budget, not your income.
- Don't forget tax. Your Upwork earnings are self-employment income. Use our US quarterly tax calculator or UK self-employed tax calculator to plan for it.
