    Profit, not turnover

Self-employed tax is based on profit: your turnover minus allowable expenses such as equipment, software, travel, a share of phone and internet, and working-from-home costs. Every pound of expenses you claim reduces both your income tax and your National Insurance.

    2026/27 rates used

    • Personal Allowance £12,570, reduced by £1 for every £2 over £100,000.
    • Income tax in England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% / 40% / 45%.
    • Scottish income tax: 19% / 20% / 21% / 42% / 45% / 48%.
